Vampires

The word “vampire” is used to describe anyone with the ability to bare their fangs and drink blood. Vampirism is genetic, and can be hidden in half-vampire families for decades.

Vampires and humans have had turbulent relationships throughout the years, and it has led to uprisings (such as the Ist and IInd Crimson Revolution). The Church dislikes the existence of vampires, and seeks to have greater control over them.

Characteristics

Drinking human blood is not necessary for vampires, and they can have a fully animal diet. However, without consuming any blood withdrawal symptoms will appear around 7 days in.

Human blood strengthens one's body significantly for a short period of time - sharpening a vampire's senses and giving them unusual physical strenght, as well as high agility. However that also means it's pretty easy to get dependent on human blood, as the effects it gives are one of a kind. It can be fatal - it's easy to land yourself in prison or end up dead after attacking humans for their blood.

A vampire's fangs are also one of their biggest strenghts, as they're usually enough to rip a victim's neck apart or drain them of enough blood to kill them.

Curiously enough, it seems like vampires very often carry "obsessions" with them - their personality and whole being often seems to chase after one specific thing, and they dedicate their entire life to it. Those obsessions are specific to each and every individual.

Withdrawal symptoms

On average, a vampire can go 7 days without consuming any blood. Around 10-14 days in, the eyes will turn fully red, and the thirst will start getting unbearable. It can cause severe hallucinations and mental distress, as well as violent behavior.

The severity of symptoms depends on the vampire's usual blood intake. People who have always drank very little blood throughout their life can last way longer without blood - however, ones that depend on it heavily often start showing symptoms much quicker.

To avoid the withdrawal symptoms, vampires will often drink blood from small animals or consume a lot of red meat. Animal blood tastes significantly worse, however it does satisfy the urges. Vampires can also drink their own blood in small amounts - however, for the vast majority it’s a repulsive and unpleasant experience, as it's essentially consuming your own body fluids.

Appearance

If no withdrawal symptoms are present, it is impossible to tell the difference between vampires and regular humans. They only bare their fangs when intending to feed, although with enough training it's possible to show them at will.

There do exist some physical traits vampires exhibit, but they are hard to notice - for one, they have harder nails that often grow into the shape of a claw. That can be prevented by always cutting them short. Their hair also grows much quicker, which requires very frequent haircuts.

The telltale signs that someone is a vampire are the withdrawal symptoms - most famously, their eyes turning red after about 2 weeks without consuming blood.

Genetics

Vampirism is a recessive trait. This means there’s a possibility of generations passing by without a single vampire showing up, only for a vampire child to appear years later.

Two “full” vampires will always have vampire offspring, same with two “full” humans always having human children. However, due to vampires having been among humanity for hundreds of years, making up as much as 20-30% of the population, many people have the hidden vampirism gene.
